Job Description
What is Box?
Box (NYSE:BOX) is the leader in Intelligent Content Management. Our platform enables organizations to fuel collaboration, manage the entire content lifecycle, secure critical content, and transform business workflows with enterprise AI. We help companies thrive in the new AI-first era of business. Founded in 2005, Box simplifies work for leading global organizations, including JLL, Morgan Stanley, and Nationwide. Box is headquartered in Redwood City, CA, with offices across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
By joining Box, you will have the unique opportunity to continue driving our platform forward. Content powers how we work. It’s the billions of files and information flowing across teams, departments, and key business processes every single day: contracts, invoices, employee records, financials, product specs, marketing assets, and more. Our mission is to bring intelligence to the world of content management and empower our customers to completely transform workflows across their organizations. With the combination of AI and enterprise content, the opportunity has never been greater to transform how the world works together and at Box you will be on the front lines of this massive shift.
Why Box needs you:
Shuttle’s mission is to help organizations securely and efficiently migrate their content from legacy systems and third-party storage providers into Box. Migration is often the first critical step in a customer’s journey, unlocking the value of Box’s platform. Shuttle ensures migrations are reliable, scalable, and preserve the fidelity of files, metadata, permissions, and other critical content attributes.
The Shuttle team develops advanced content migration capabilities that enable customers to move their files quickly and seamlessly from on-premises storage and other cloud platforms into Box. We build next-generation migration features that improve speed, efficiency, and scalability, while ensuring bulk migrations maintain the integrity of associated data. Our systems support global content imports, allowing customers to store data in specific regions worldwide, and enable enterprises to expand both the volume and types of content they manage in Box by making migrations smoother and more predictable.
We are looking for a Python Tech Lead to join the Shuttle team. In this role, you will take ownership of the architectural consistency and technical direction of the core systems powering migrations at scale. You will guide design decisions across microservices and adapters, drive scalable and reliable solutions for complex distributed environments, and ensure alignment with Box’s broader architecture - particularly as we evolve our metadata, regional storage, and AI capabilities.
What you'll do:
Own architectural consistency and validate significant technical decisions across Shuttle’s services.
Design and guide the evolution of critical systems, including migration adapters and backend microservices.
Drive resolution of complex system-level problems in areas such as Kubernetes orchestration, cloud VMs, and networking.
Ensure fixes address root causes, not just symptoms.
Provide technical mentorship and oversight to senior and mid-level engineers.
Collaborate with other Box teams on integrations (Box Consulting, Archive, Metadata initiatives, and potentially File System and API).
Contribute to roadmap planning by aligning Shuttle’s architecture with Box’s broader goals around metadata and AI.
Participate in our on-call rotation, available at all times while on-call to help respond to and triage any issues that arise.
Who you are:
We are an AI-first company. This means you approach your work with a growth mindset and find ways to leverage AI to help make faster, smarter decisions that will 10X your impact at Box.
10+ years of professional software development experience.
Strong proficiency in Python, including debugging and profiling.
Broad software engineering expertise across multiple languages and paradigms.
Experience with distributed systems, Kubernetes, and cloud environments (preferably GCP).
Ability to debug complex system-level issues (threading, networking, VM behavior).
Strong architectural thinking, ensuring consistency and scalability across services.
English proficiency at B2 level or higher.
Additional points for:
Experience with Node.js and JavaScript, especially for adapters and integrations.
Exposure to frontend development patterns (not required but helpful).
Familiarity with enterprise migrations or large-scale content management systems.
Mindset:
Systems thinker who understands both deep technical detail and cross-service architectural alignment.
Opinionated yet collaborative, able to challenge peers constructively.
Proactive ownership and drive to ensure solutions are complete, correct, and maintainable.
Diplomatic leadership style that mentors and uplifts others while maintaining technical authority.
