Role Purpose
As a Software Manager, you will lead, inspire, and support a product-focused engineering team building solutions used daily by technicians and operators of CAT earthmoving and paving machines.
This is a hands-on leadership role where you will balance writing code and shaping technical architecture with coaching talent and ensuring high-quality delivery across embedded Linux, Android, and web components.
Key Responsibilities
🛠️ Hands-On Engineering & Technical Leadership
Active Contributor: Actively write code, contribute to feature development, perform hands-on debugging, and drive defect resolution.
Architecture & Design: Own and contribute to software architecture and detailed design while leading rigorous design and code reviews.
Mentorship: Coach and elevate engineers in modern C++, embedded systems design, multi-threading, profiling, and debugging.
👥 People Leadership & Team Management
Team Leadership: Directly manage a focused team of 4–6 software engineers, taking responsibility for goal setting, mentoring, and performance management.
Execution & Delivery: Remove technical and operational roadblocks, clarify priorities, and allocate work effectively to meet delivery milestones.
Culture Builder: Foster a continuous learning environment that values clean code, knowledge sharing, and technical excellence.
⚙️ Delivery, Process & Agile Engineering
SDF Alignment: Ensure strict adherence to the CTCT Software Development Framework (SDF).
Agile Rigor: Guide the team through backlog grooming, sprint planning, system integration, and defect triage.
DevOps Excellence: Champion clean code standards, thorough documentation, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and build health.
🌐 Cross-Functional & Global Collaboration
Multidisciplinary Alignment: Partner closely with systems, controls, sensor, and hardware engineering teams to integrate complex features.
Global Impact: Collaborate with geographically dispersed CTCT engineering sites to align with global leadership and drive continuous process improvements.
What You Bring to the Team
Required Technical Qualifications
8–12+ years of total software development experience, including 2+ years in formal technical leadership or engineering management roles.
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics, or a related engineering field.
Core C++ & Linux: Strong, hands-on C++ development experience tailored for Embedded Linux environments.
Systems Expertise: Deep understanding of embedded systems, concurrency, multi-threading, and performance optimization.
Sensors & Positioning: Familiarity with high-accuracy positioning and sensor technologies (GNSS, IMU, Laser, Optical, Sonic).
Modern Tooling: High proficiency with Git, CI/CD integration pipelines, automated testing, and structured code review workflows.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills
Web technology exposure with Angular and TypeScript.
System-level understanding of Caterpillar heavy equipment, hydraulics, or machine control systems.
Background in robotics, machine control, or autonomous guidance systems.
Familiarity with industrial safety standards and field deployment for machine-impacting software.
